Review: Pokemon, Detective Pikachu

Let’s start with some background to get where all this begins. This film is based on a video game of the same name that was released for the Nintendo 3DS (and 2DS) last year in America and 2 years earlier in Japan. If you are interested in this film whether you are or not an avid Pokémon Fan, the film is very friendly and understandable but if you expect the usual battles from playing the Pokémon games or from watching the Pokémon TV show, you will be a bit disappointed.

Comparing other adaptations, I might say that Detective Pikachu completely embraces the Pokémon lore but not to its reality. The movie also dishes out stunning visuals. The CGI was amazingly beautiful. All the neon design, texturing, colors, movement, and everything were developed in a good way. We could really feel there blending with all the Pokémons. All these neon themes going on takes you definitely you on a trip to Tokyo. If we talk about the plot we might agree that it isn’t outstanding but for the first real theater-released live-action movie of the Pokémon franchise, this has been great actually succeeding in catering to fans. As I mentioned it above, the Pokemon and visuals are beautiful. The speaking Pikachu aka Ryan Reynolds carries the movie and steals the cameras as always. I loved how they used the instrumental version of the Western opening and actually let Ryan Reynolds sing it.

Now back to the film, we have to say that has plot-wise twists but somehow predictable in some cases. The human characters well, they won’t stay with you for the long run but they are good. I think fans will be treated with all the references like Easter eggs everywhere in scenery and dialogue and they also mentioned Kanto so this means more is coming.

The only thing, I didn’t like but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy was how they displayed the humor because it got a bit too extreme for Pokémon. I mean one of their targets for this film are kids and they went two or three notes higher. As an old veteran lover of the Tv show, I have to mention that Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Charizard and Gyarados were top-notch. My favorite definitely is Psyduck.

Overall, it was very entertaining. A good start for what I think is the first step to more Pokémon movies. Children will surely love and enjoy it. Old veterans and geeks will surely enjoy lots of the fanservice during this nostalgia trip even if it is not exactly what they were expecting.

Empecemos con algunos antecedentes para llegar a donde comienza todo esto. Esta película se basa en un videojuego del mismo nombre que se lanzó para la Nintendo 3DS (y 2DS) el año pasado en Estados Unidos y 2 años antes en Japón. Si te interesa esta película, seas o no un ávido fanático de Pokémon, la película es muy amigable y comprensible, pero si esperas las batallas habituales de los juegos de Pokémon o de ver el programa de televisión de Pokémon, estarás un poco decepcionado. .

Comparando otras adaptaciones, podría decir que el Detective Pikachu abraza completamente la historia de los Pokémon, pero no a su realidad. La película también ofrece imágenes impresionantes. El CGI era increíblemente hermoso. Todo el diseño de neón, la textura, los colores, el movimiento y todo se desarrollaron de una buena manera. Realmente podríamos sentirnos mezclando con todos los Pokémons. Todos estos temas de neón que te llevan definitivamente te llevan en un viaje a Tokio.

Si hablamos de la trama, podríamos estar de acuerdo en que no es excepcional, pero para la primera película de acción real de la franquicia Pokémon, lanzada en el cine, esto ha sido grandioso en realidad para atender a los fanáticos. Como lo mencioné anteriormente, los Pokémon y los efectos visuales son hermosos. El parlante Pikachu, alias Ryan Reynolds, lleva la película y roba las cámaras como siempre. Me encantó cómo utilizaron la versión instrumental de la apertura occidental y dejar que Ryan Reynolds la cantara.

Ahora volviendo a la película, tenemos que decir que tiene giros de trama, pero de alguna manera predecibles en algunos casos. Los personajes humanos bien, no se quedarán contigo a largo plazo, pero son buenos. Creo que los fanáticos serán consentidos con todas las referencias, como huevos de Pascua en todos los escenarios y diálogos, y también mencionaron a Kanto, por lo que esto significa que se avecinan más.

La única cosa que no me gustó, pero eso no significa que no disfrutara, es la forma en que mostraban el humor porque se volvió demasiado extremo para los Pokémon. Me refiero a que uno de sus objetivos para esta película son los niños y creo que se pasaron de notas. Como una antigua veterana amante del programa de televisión, debo mencionar que Pikachu, Mewtwo, Jigglypuff, Psyduck, Charizard y Gyarados eran de primera categoría. Mi favorito definitivamente es Psyduck.

En general, fue muy entretenida. Un buen comienzo para lo que creo que es el primer paso para más películas de Pokémon. Los niños seguramente la amarán y lo disfrutarán. Los veteranos viejos y los geek seguramente disfrutarán mucho de ser consentidos con este viaje de nostalgia, incluso si no es exactamente lo que esperaban.
